More than 350 people, mostly senior citizens, came together at Margate’s Jewish Community Center on Wednesday, May 16th, to hear an hour-long concert of ‘swing’ music from the big band era, sponsored by the Schultz- Hill Foundation. The free concert was the first performance in the 2018 Music & Memories Series, designed to bring the arts to seniors in the community.
The music was provided by the Vineland-based 16-piece Buddy Gale Band, under the direction of Dr. Louis Giunta, a retired music educator and school administrator. The list of songs included favorites by Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, and Glenn Miller, and had the audience humming the tunes, clapping along with the music’s tempo and applauding enthusiastically at the conclusion of each number.
Dr. Giunta engaged the audience with an entertaining banter, introducing the next number as well as introducing the members of the band. “We will not forget you or the music of your era, and will pass these songs on so our children and grandchildren can enjoy this music for generations to come,” said Dr. Giunta.
The Schultz-Hill Foundation was happy to partner with the Milton & Betty Katz Jewish Community Center for the Music and Memories Series. Sponsors of the concert included The Forza Insurance Group, the Hordes Family and OceanFirst Bank.
